Gold Rush Tour – Yukon and Alaska

Re-live the Gold Rush of 1898! Discover the land of the Midnight Sun, the land of the magic and mystery, of rivers, deep blue lakes and magnificent alpine scenery. The canoe-minivan combination tour begins with a nine day canoe expedition down the famous Teslin and Yukon Rivers.

Day 1 Whitehorse

 Arrival in Whitehorse where you'll meet your fellow group travellers. Opportunity to discover the famous capital of the Yukon, and your stops should include the MS Klondyke, one of the last Yukon stern-wheelers still around, and a visit to the McBride Museum. Overnight in an hotel.

Days 2 -10 Teslin/Yukon River

You will be collected by minivan and transferred to Johnson’s Crossing for the start of your canoe tour down the Teslin, later the Yukon River. You are spending 9 days on thes magnificent rivers, travelling downstream approx 360 kms

Day 10 Carmacks - Dempster Highway

Today arrive in Carmacks on the Yukon River, leave your canoes and travel by minivan via the Klondike Highway and set up camp near the Dempster Highway, The Highway is 730 kms of gravel road linking the interior of the Yukon Territory with Inuvik, located at the delta of the huge Mackenzie River in the Northwest Territories. Camp at the base of Tombstone Mountain.

Day 11 Tombstones Mountains

Today you will do some spectacular hiking in this remarkable landscape of tundra and mountains. The Tombstone Mountains have a unique moon landscape. Evening round the campfire. Hiking time 3 to 7 hours.

Day 12 Dempster Highway - Dawson City

Leave this remarkable and beautiful area and travel to Dawson City, the historic gold rush town and home of many legends. Diamond Tooth Gertie and her Can-Can girls will entertain you at the casino this evening. Two nights in Dawson City.

Day 13 Dawson City

Today tour the famous Gold Rush town, visiting Jack London and Robert Service cabins, the Museum and Bonanza and Eldorado Creeks where you will visit an active gold mine.

Day 14 Dempster – Top of the World Highway

The route today takes you from the fields of the Klondike across the Yukon River by ferry. Travel via the Top of the World Highway towards Alaska through sub-Arctic mountain tundra above the timberline. Pass the most northerly US-border station at Little Gold Creek, visiting small historic towns like Chicken, Action Jackson and Jack Wade en route.

Day 15 Kluane, Sheep Mountain

Today drive along the Alaska Highway, crossing the border into Alaska at Beaver Creek. Drive along the shores of scenic Kluane Lake and stop at Mount Wallace (better known as Sheep Mountain) where you can spot the rare white dall sheep. Perhaps take a helicopter flight over the glacier. Hiking time 3 to 6 hours.

Days 16 – 17 Haines Junction (Kluane National Park)

Travel to Haines Junction, gateway to Kluane National Park. Set up base camp and explore the beautiful scenery of the Park. A hiking trip into one of the high alpine valleys will give you the chance to see wildlife such as dall sheep, moose, caribou and grizzly bears. Perhaps take a spectacular flight by bush plane over immense glaciers (optional). Hiking time 3-6 hours.

Day 18 Tatshenshini River, Kluane National Park

Today go white water rafting on the Tatshenshini River, a highlight of the tour! Overnight at Million Dollar Falls Campground.

Day 19 Million Dollar Falls - Haines, Alaska

Drive south to Haines, crossing the Chilkat Pass and following the Chilkat River where, during the Fall Salmon Migration, thousands of majestic bald eagles can be seen. Spend the rest of the day in front of the snow-covered Chilkat Mountain Range. Visit Haines, an important centre of the native Tlingit culture and watch Totem pole carvers at work and watch ceremonial Indian dances at the local theatre.

Day 20 Haines - Skagway

Today leave Haines and travel to Skagway via ferry through the Lynn Fjord where you may see seals, whales, bald eagles and giant Alaska brown bears. Skagway, the base camp for all Chilkoot Pass travellers a hundred years ago, is still an historic gold rush town. Relax in one of the bars during the evening and soak up the gold rush atmosphere. Overnight in Skagway.

Day 21 Skagway - Whitehorse

Spend the morning sightseeing in Skagway and perhaps take a ride on the famous Whitepass-Railroad (optional). Return drive to Whitehorse stopping at the Carcross Desert (the smallest desert in the world) and via Emerald Lake. Overnight in an hotel.

Day 22 Whitehorse

Transfer to the airport for your flight out.
